Pre-diabetes Self Referral Trial Starts in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull

In most parts of the country individuals can only join the Healthier You: the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme if they are referred by their GP, but in three specific areas of Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull people will be able to self refer from now until January 2017.

Anyone aged 25 – 40, living in Washwood Heath, Smethwick or Chelmsley Wood, will be eligible for a free risk assessment and, if they are found to be at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, a blood test.  If the blood test shows them to be pre-diabetic and eligible to join the Living Well Taking Control (LWTC) programme, they can choose to do so without a referral from their GP.

Sue Turton, who is leading the LWTC programme, said: “We are delighted to be involved in trialling this way of identifying and supporting people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  The number of people with Type 2 diabetes, and associated health complications, is rising dramatically across the country and is particularly high in the Birmingham area, so it is important for us to understand what will encourage people to find out whether or not they are at risk and be sufficiently motivated to take action to avoid it.”
